Art in the Morning: Philip Simmons

Life-size, cut-out figures and icons comes to mind when looking at sculptor, Philip Simmons’ works. But, Simmons wants to translate “comments on current American culture and politics, by creating signs that hang from chains or are wall-mounted” through his artworks. In this specific piece above, “Little Buddies,” the play in politics (red and blue, or democratic versus republican parties) and symbolism (ax versus heart) is active and speaks volumes. Needless to say, Simmons does execute his overarching theme in all pieces he has created thus far.

Featured Artist: Juan Manuel Parajes

Featured in one of our  “Art in the Morning” segments, we are highlighting Juan Manuel Parajes again, but digging a little deeper into this street collage artist.

What best describes his artwork:

Unfinished geometric elements, lines intercrossed towards the infinite… All suspended, floating, in a ground swell of manifold and solid colors…Everything, as a whole, in constant movement, but also suspended in the air…

Juan Manuel Parajes uses layers of iconic images–the late Steve Jobs, Jimi Hendrix, Malcolm X, among other visuals stimulants–creating a classic artwork, knowingly or unknowingly. His artwork has been shown at Christies Gallery in Paris, France to Villa de Arte Gallery in Barcelona, Spain, claiming an international presence. There’s something always alluring about street art. Maybe it’s the beauty of the unexpected. The unexpected location (outside of museum or gallery spaces) and message. Parajes manages to harness this complexity.

Art in the Morning: Diane LaRaja

Painter, Illustrator, and Art Director, Diane LaRaja, believes “art should be uplifting.” With subjects circling around people and animals, LaRaja’s personal philosophy of art resonates loudly. Featured Artist: Redheadphone

More organically said, Redheadphone makes “music you can dance to or stand still and ponder lyrical choices. The idea is to make you bounce, of course.” Based in NYC, this female-fronted band, has climbed the number one position on the commercial radio in the Dominican Republic and, has been recognized by Jane Magazine and Maybelline. By pulling music from hip-hop and overriding it with live horns and DJ percussion, the rich melodies creates a wave of distinctive sound, heard in “Plain” or “Somewhere To Go.”

Art Thought: Occupy Museums and Art Spaces

As the year wraps up, and we welcome in 2012 with new hopes and resolutions (that quickly fade after three months), one of the prolific movements-that’s still continuing-transformed not only the economy, but also the art world. What is this ongoing event? No other than, Occupy Wall Street. This domestic protest penetrated the art world, which I recently discovered, and is still active under the name Occupy Museums for the art realm. Their mission:

We are artists, writers, curators, and art professionals lending our skills to produce art, cultural events and projects, with a particular focus on OWS itself as a social art process. We work with organizations and artists that require a focused team to facilitate their projects. We produce art projects, large-scale events, and exhibitions.

The beast being tackled through Occupy Museums was sparked by Noah Fischer, to fight the “intense commercialization and co-optation of art.” Being part of the Millennials, the ideas and demands of this transforming society in these arenas are necessary. I remember sitting in class about radical movements, comparing the 60s and 70s timeline to the twenty-first century. I thought about how my generation is complacent, inactive-myself included-just satisfied with what was handed to us. But, with the unexpected rise of unemployment, my peers proved me wrong. To assimilate and express the growing disparities from corporate to arts garners change.

I leave you with these questions for thought. As we enter 2012, what change do you want to see within the arts? What impact are you going to make to see the transformation take place?
