Having something unique makes it more special, so after studying pique assiette (translates to “stolen from the plate”), I developed a style of my own, transforming ordinary, household objects — vases, picture frames, kitchen caddies, lamps, etc. — into one of a kind, truly original decorative art. I break plates I love, often those with interesting images and words. To personalize the work and create a biographical component, I enjoy including photos and text with the mosaic. A writer, I work in the media and in mixed media, using both to tell a story. Tiles, glass gems and other surprises are the punctuation.
I invite you to commission me so I can execute your creative vision. The process inspires new ideas and keeps the work fresh. I am particularly gratified by those who return each time they want a gift to celebrate a wedding, new baby or any occasion.
My background in comedy writing explains why I may be the only one doing satirical mosaics. Please look at the “Breaking News” Series, edgy pieces that comment on America’s current crises — from politicians involved in sex scandals to Wall Street swindlers — fittingly done on cremation urns. Go to Limited Editions and look for faces you recognize. “Is The Right Right?” showing right wing politicians and pundits among red, white and blue shards with American flag images, was selected by the highly competitive Brooklyn Waterfront Arts Coalition Wide Open Exhibition.

Sylvia Petra Broubalow was born on an Army base and considers herself from nowhere in particular although her parents are from NYC. She traveled most of her childhood and this reflects in her ability to adapt to any situation life throws at her. She did not start painting until 2006 when she became ill. She had no idea she could even paint. She prefers acrylic to other mediums and also loves mixed media. She decided to change her life from Corporate America and go back to school and get a degree in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts. She commutes from Bethlehem, PA and would give anything to live in NYC. She has pushed her work around enough in her area and decided its time to move on to NYC and promote her work. She has had 2 solo exhibitions, quite a few group shows, been featured in The Township Times Newspaper, AbsouteArts.com feature artist, WorldWideArtResources.com feature artist, has been in quite a few juried shows, several galleries, has had several commissions, one collection in the Canary Islands from Saatchi Gallery online, and was the apprentice artist on the Mural for the city of Easton, PA.

It is not a question of what I do, but who I am…
I began painting in 2006. I just picked up a paintbrush and started painting with acrylics. I work mostly with acrylics and sometimes with watercolor. I love working with bright bold colors and lines. I generally work on only one or two paintings at a time and I choose my subjects by what delights and captures my imagination. I want my work to tell a story, but not necessarily the same story to every person. Painting is Gods gift and my desire is to use it to bring joy to others. My ultimate satisfaction comes from continually inventing and improving myself.
I am a full time Fine Arts student at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and would like to own my own business as well teach art in my studio.
On a personal note, I am single and I enjoy painting, drawing, listening to music, gardening, camping, and spending time with my family and friends.
