ART VERSUS SCIENCE – THE COLOUR FASCINATION
Self-taught 33yo contemporary artist Leni Kae (dip Colour Therapy) from Sydney Australia has painted since age 9. She has a very holistic perspective on art and a deep consideration for how structure and semiotics in art can shape viewer’s emotional experience. What evolved was a natural discovery of the unbreakable link between art and science.
The Australian contemporary artist and trained colour specialist integrates semiotics of shape, composition and colour psychology to produce artworks with powerful subconscious and sensory triggers, or what she refers to as “Energy Art”.
“Leni Kae’s works vibrantly interact with viewers, prompting sensory awakening, eliciting positive memories, and inviting self evaluation.”
Colour is a particular fascination of the artist; the powerful effects of color and semiotics, which together can alter moods, trigger hormonal reactions, and awaken dormant memories, are vital to a dually artistic and scientific mission. Her works vibrantly interact with viewers, prompting sensory awakening, eliciting positive memories, and inviting self evaluation. Line work is also a distinctive feature in Kae’s artwork, with the artist saying they are “representative of waves of our thoughts, reaching out like energetic extensions of the soul or spirit of the work”.
ARTISTIC INTENTION & INFLUENCES
Leni Kae’s eclectic, colourful artwork and intention is void of exclusion, preferring instead to focus on commonalities of our existence; the colour that excites us, and the dream and emotion that unite us.
Underpinning Kae’s work is hence this wholesome Theosophical desire:
“..to remind the audience of the universal bond we carry as human beings – emotion, memory and dream”.
Kae’s influences too are eclectic, with her work having the unusual influence of a variety of artists, poets, history, philosophers, mathematicians, scientists. Frequent references appear to Keats and Browning; the Ancient practice of colour therapy; the form and bold colour influence of Matisse; and the subconscious dream element of Dali; and studies of Pythagoras and Plato.
LYRIC WRITING
Leni Kae’s passion for writing and poetry has also evolved to lyric writing. While her painting is often coloured with a sense of ‘escapism’ and ‘liberation’ that invites the audience to connect with dream and beauty, her lyrics are coloured with raw feelings, painting a picture with words that connect with the audience on a level of raw emotive truth. Leni has achieved several semi-finalist status and highly commended awards for her lyrics writing, including “Autumn Leaves“:
“I hear you breathe beside me, and sigh for life /
Soft golden leaves grow around me, now I’m alive /
I wish these seconds of autumn, would wake and show their grace /
And the autumns leaves would fall now, fall down, reveal your face..”
